We took a field trip to visit an old fashioned, restored saw mill that is steam and volunteer powered. It was absolutely amazing and awesome! It is only open a handful of days a year, here are the dates for 2026 so you can plan your visit:

And here a a few pictures from our visit. But they hardly do the place justice. You gotta be there to hear the huffing and puffing of steam engines, the whistle for lunch, the roar of the saw blades, the grindage of planer teeth, the smell of redwood sawdust, and the whack of blacksmith hammers. You can feel the goodness of the forest flowing through the creek, the timber and the people who work at the mill. Solid and epic experience. GO!!!

This is the slideshow portion of our discussion about the pulley. In lab we will learn to use the ratchet strap, tie down a load with half hitches, use a timber hitch for logs or for a bow string, coil up a rope neatly, keep on working on the patio, and so on.

Here are the pictures, stories will be presented in class. Lab for today will be along the lines of cleaning and lubricating skateboard wheels, filling up the tires on our wheelbarrows, learning to use the compressor, and wheeling carts full of plants and things around the department.

The lab for today will be cutting rebar, moving some fiberglass containers and dirt with levers and rollers, digging and moving the soil for the base of a patio, and so on. Using levers to make our work easier.
